The Mad Scientist
About this plugin
The Mad Scientist is a parallel RMS compressor built around a simple idea: the more you drive the input, the more character you get. Even-order harmonic saturation is baked directly into the input stage – no separate drive knob, no menu option. Push the gain, the tubes light up, and a subtle warmth gets added before the signal hits the compressor. Back off, and it cleans up.
Underneath the steampunk shell is a full-featured dynamics processor. Fixed 4:1 ratio keeps the compressor musical without requiring you to think about it. The Mix knob blends the compressed wet signal against the clean dry signal for natural-sounding parallel compression at any setting. M/S mode processes the mid and side channels independently so stereo width stays intact even under heavy compression. Auto-release mode adapts program-dependently – fast when the compressor is working hard, slow when it is barely touching.
The two VU meters show output level with 300 ms analog ballistics. The tube overlays respond to input gain. There is a reason this thing looks the way it does.
- Parallel RMS compression – Mix knob blends wet and dry for natural compression at any ratio
- Input-driven saturation – Even-order tanh harmonic color scales with the gain knob – no separate drive control
- M/S mode – Mid and side channels compressed independently; stereo image stays wide
- Auto-release – Knob fully left = program-dependent release that adapts to the material
- Tube level display – Three-segment glow tied to input gain, not output
- Dual VU meters – 300 ms RMS ballistics on left and right output channels
- Fixed 4:1 ratio – Musical, bus-appropriate, nothing to overthink
- Bypass with needle falloff – Needles decay gracefully when bypassed
