Watch Low Res In Action

A Bit Crusher You Play.

Hold Engage and it falls apart.

Hold Engage and the signal gets crushed, let go and it's clean again, with a 10 ms crossfade either way so nothing clicks. Low Res reduces the sample rate and the bit depth, and two big readouts show exactly how low-res it is, Bits in whole numbers and Rate in kHz.

Rate is a sample-and-hold from 500 Hz up to 48 kHz, and it's deliberately aliased, no oversampling, that's the sound. Bits runs from 1 to 16 and quantizes to exactly that many bits, with a Dither switch that adds a little triangular noise before the quantizer. Tone is a low-pass after the crusher, from 500 Hz to 20 kHz, and at 20 kHz it's off.

Great for drums, bass, vocals, whole mixes and more, grab it for a four bar fill or leave it engaged as a color. Mix blends against the dry signal and Output trims after.

VU meter

Hold It Down. Hear It Fall Apart.

The demo runs the full plugin, every control and every preset. Hold Engage over a drum loop and pull Bits and Rate down while you listen.

Bits and Rate

Two Knobs, Two Kinds of Broken.

Bits sets how many levels the signal is quantized to, 16 is clean and 1 is about as broken as audio gets. Rate sets how often the signal is sampled, and everything in between is the sound of old samplers, game consoles and cheap converters. Both sit next to a digital readout, so you can dial in a number and come back to it.

  • Bits - 1 to 16, whole numbers, default 8
  • Rate - 500 Hz to 48 kHz, default 11.025 kHz
  • Dither - On or Off, triangular noise before the quantizer
  • Tone - Low-pass from 500 Hz to 20 kHz, 20 kHz is off

Tone, Mix and Output

Tame It, Blend It, Trim It.

Tone sits after the crusher, so you can keep the grit and take the harshest top end off. Mix blends the crushed signal against the dry for parallel crushing, and Output trims the result by plus or minus 12 dB. Power Off is a bit-exact bypass and there is no latency at any setting.

  • Tone - Smooths the crushed signal
  • Mix - 0 to 100 percent
  • Output - ±12 dB

Watch It Work

Readouts You Can Read From Across the Room.

The Bits and Rate readouts show the exact settings in the accent color. Two LED strips show the left and right input level, and the stereo VU reads the output level.

  • Readouts - Bits and Rate, always visible
  • Input meters - Left and right LED strips
  • Stereo VU - Output level, left and right

Color and Presets

Pick a Color. Start From a Preset.

The Color knob changes the whole faceplate to any hue, fluorescent green by default, and it's a preference saved on your machine, not part of a preset or a session. Power Off turns the faceplate dark and passes the audio through untouched.

Ten factory presets plus Default are starting points, Lo-Fi Radio, Old Sampler, 8-Bit Console, Crushed Drums, Telephone, Soft Fuzz, Wide Open, Gritty Hats, Broken Speaker and Dust, and A/B, Save, Save As, Copy, Delete, Import and Export handle your own. The window resizes and remembers its size.
