Sure, usually we get great sounding kicks and they just need that subtle nudge to make a complete chef's kiss, other times, we get a recording of a wet cardboard box dropped from a second story while a glass truck overturns. Gate, EQ & Transient Shaper
Gate and a focused EQ (switchable-slope HPF/LPF plus three parametric bands for thump, body, and beater click) get the source clean before anything else touches it. A classic two-knob Transient Shaper punches the attack forward or softens it, and pulls the sustain tighter or lets it ring longer - independent of the compressor.
Compressor, Saturation & Sub Generator
The compressor is built for exactly this job: stepped ratios up to 20:1, Auto attack/release, and a Mix knob for parallel blending when full compression is too much. Crush them with your fingers. :D Saturation is an audible, driven stage, you can sneak it a hidden "kiss" - or you can push it to filth. The Sub Generator adds a blendable low-end thump or sustained tone under the kick, frequency and decay both under your hands, off until you dial it in to perfection.
