Try the Free DemoBoxy, flat, lifeless drums have a specific problem: cardboard in the midrange eating the attack.
Static EQ can't fix that without thinning the kit out. Shell Shock fixes it differently - Box digs into the boxy frequency only when a drum hits, then lets go in between, so the cardboard disappears without losing the body. Punch brings the attack forward or softens it. Glue holds the kit together. Drive adds grit. Room puts it in a space.
Box, Punch, Glue, Drive, Room. One signal chain, one knob each.

Hear the Cardboard Disappear.
Flip on Box Listen and solo exactly what Box is cutting - set Focus by ear, then listen to it vanish from the full mix the instant you bring it back in.

The Signature Control
A static EQ cut in the boxy midrange has to sit there all the time, thinning the kit out along with the cardboard. Box is dynamic - it follows the drum level, digging in on every hit where the cardboard lives and backing off in between where the body lives. Focus picks where the box is: kick-tom, snare-body, or snare-crack.
Glue, Drive, Room
Glue is a one-knob bus compressor, auto makeup, sidechain high-passed at 90Hz so the kick doesn't pump the kit. Drive is asymmetric tube saturation into an envelope-aware soft clipper - warmth at low settings, genuinely smashed pushed hard. Room blends a small space in parallel, underneath the dry signal, so a close-miked kit still sounds like it's in a room.
15 Places to Start
Rock drum bus, hip-hop knock, indie room kit, parallel smash, tight pop kit, breakbeat grit, electronic drum punch, and more - real starting points built from the actual controls. Auto-Level matches output loudness back to input, so A/B comparisons against bypass stay honest.
